Canon EOS 1D X Mark II Media Launch

Canon EOS 1D X Mark II Media Launch

Events, Photography
Earlier today, I was at the Canon media launch event at Hilton Kuala Lumpur for the launching of their latest photography products. The main event was the launching of the brand new Canon EOS 1D X Mark II, dubbed as the King of EOS. Yes, I believe that statement. Before we get to that point, I'll write about the event first before drilling down to the main product. Today's launch was not just about the King of EOS. Canon also announced their latest compact cameras like the Ixus and PowerShot series as well as their latest compact Selphy printer. Not forgetting, the new 1300D and 80D were also introduced at the launch. The event went full swing at around 10.30am starting with the welcome speech by Mr Wataru Nishioka, President and CEO of Canon Marketing Malaysia. We at Canon h...

Love Food Photography? Foodie App Is For You

Android Apps, App Review, Smartphone Photography, Tech & Gadgets
I know there are many foodies out there who love taking photos of their food before munching on. I'm sure they would have a few photo editing apps installed in their phones to enhance the photos making it more presentable. Instagram, VSCO and Snapseed are among the favourites. Now what if you have an app made especially for food photography? Foodie camera app is exactly what you're looking for. I have this app installed on my phone for a few weeks now. I was testing it to see how good the app is. Well, after those few weeks all I can say is...not bad. Don't get me wrong. When I say not bad, I don't mean it's not great. It does have a few advantages over using a photo editing app. All the enhancements are at your disposal on the main camera screen. All you have to do is choose your e

Lily – A Drone That Will Follow You Around

Tech & Gadgets, Tech News
GoPro has always been the choice for action videographers and those selfie stick users. Sure, no doubt that it takes awesome looking video and still images. But you still rely on the "monopod", as what they call it, to take a selfie wherever you go. Imagine if you don't need a "monopod". Drones has been around for a while. You can also attach a GoPro camera on the drone to snap a picture or shoot a video, and some comes with a built-in camera as well. With that, you can take a selfie from a further distance way above your head. Good for group selfies. But you still need someone to control the drone remotely. Meet "Lily", described as the first throw-and-shoot camera. It is an action camera built into a smart drone that will follow you wherever you go while shooting you from above...

Oppo Latest Launch: The N3 and R5

New Release
The long awaited launch of Oppo's new rotating camera flagship phone is finally revealed with the launch of their latest head turner, the Oppo N3. Fans of Oppo should be excited about this new release alongside with the new R5, Oppo's new mid-range contender. First up, the Oppo N3 will come with a motorised rotating camera this time instead of the user having to turn the camera manually. Well, users will still be able to rotate the camera manually when needed but that is said to be the main attraction. Who wouldn't want an automated rotating camera right? That would be cool. The N3 will also come with a fingerprint scanner, the first one by Oppo located at the back of the phone. Their flagship Find 7 does not come with a fingerprint scanner. This means that Oppo is really putting t...

KLPF 2014 – Not What I Expected

KLPF, Photography
Last month I had the time to head over to one of my favourite exhibition, the Kuala Lumpur Photography Festival (KLPF) 2014 held at Mid Valley Exhibition Centre. I have been to KLPF event many times over the past 4-5 years. I have always enjoyed the atmosphere when attending the workshops and talks. But this time around it is a little bit different. It doesn't feel as fun like before. I was expecting lots of goodies to be found such as accessories and camera stuffs. I was looking for a nice small camera bag that I got from 2013 KLPF event. But none of those goodies were sold. Practically there was no accessories shops at all. I was very disappointed at that. As for the workshops, it was a little bit dull. Last year we were having a hard time getting in the seminar room because there ...
Let’s Try Out The Donut Selfie

Let’s Try Out The Donut Selfie

Blog, Photography
Donut Selfie? People will wonder what that is. I wondered too but I found an article that explains about that and it made me realise how cool it is. Yep, selfies are out...donut selfies are in. Unlike still photos like the usual selfie, donut selfies are taken in a video format. It is pretty cool to see how it turns out. The person behind the idea of donut selfie is by a girl name Karen X Cheng. I personally like the idea of making the motion goes around in a loop and making it appear that you travel to places with some special teleportation ability. Usually these kind of effects can only be made with Hollywood style CGI and high-end cameras. But no. You can do this by using only your arm and your smartphone. How to do it? Well, the idea is to start by placing the phone's camera on t...

Review: Xiaomi Mi3 – Incredible Performance at Lesser Cost

MIUI, Reviews, Xiaomi
What do you expect to get from a low priced flagship (should I call it flagship?) Android smartphone? Surprisingly...a very reliable high spec Android phone. No kidding. We all heard about the news when it went on sale and went sold out less than half an hour later. And the latest online sale (from what I heard), 7000 units went on sale and sold out within 39 seconds! Crazy. I should be because the Xiaomi Mi3 is going for RM769 but having a flagship specifications that are similar to LG G2, Nexus 5, Galaxy S5, Xperia Z1 and many other mainstream flagship phones at less than half the price. So cheap, no wonder this phone went sold out within such a short time. I had the luxury of trying out this phone for a week, on loan by a very nice Xiaomi hardcore user and also the team leader for...

10 Tech Things Going Obsolete

Tech & Gadgets
As we evolve, technology evolves too. From what used to be only a handful of (rich) people owning a mobile phone back in the late 80's and early 90's, to what we see today where even kids in pre-school have a smartphone in their pocket. Time changes everything indeed. I remember owning my first mobile phone back in 1995 or was it 1996. It was an Ericsson phone. It was one of the smallest phones at the time but it was bigger than the famous Nokia 3310. It only has one line of text displayed in monochrome LCD, not suitable for SMS. Now, who needs SMS when we have WhatsApp? Having said that, most of the things we used to have back then are going to disappear soon, or already gone. Maybe. After reading an article in a recent Mobile World magazine issue about things that are going obsolet...

Comparison Review: Ninetology U9Z1 vs Samsung Galaxy Mega 6.3

Comparison Review: Ninetology U9Z1 vs Samsung Galaxy Mega 6.3

Reviews
Close to a month ago I did a review on a Ninetology phone vs a Samsung phone, and recently I did another review on phones made by the same companies. This time is more like a battle of the giants! Ninetology U9 Z1 is the largest Android smartphone made by Ninetology to-date with 5.7 inch screen. One the other side of the ring is the Samsung Galaxy Mega with it's huge 6.3 inch screen. Both of these phones can be in the phablet category but the Z1 can still considered as a smartphone rather than a phablet. As how I did the last time, I split the usage between the two phones as 3 days each. Both phones are good. The Z1 feels solid and the size is still manageable but the Galaxy Mega is too big for me to handle in one hand. Let's check out the brief specifications for both phones. ...

Review: Ninetology U9 R1 – The Slim Imaging Wonder

Reviews, Tech & Gadgets
When I first opened the box, I was amazed to see such a slim phone. The bright red looks really good on this one. I've been told that the camera clarity on this phone is really good so I can't wait to put it to test straight away. The Ninetology U9 R1 is a super slim lightweight smartphone powered by Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean with a quad-core 1.2GHz processor and 1GB RAM. As far as where endurance is concerned, this phone did well for me. After I installed the usual apps, it still performs well under harsh usage on daily basis. The box is quite big for keeping in something so small. But it's ok I guess. All comes standard. Phone (duh), USB charger, earphone, rear plastic case and the warranty/manual booklet. Here's a brief specifications on the R1 Platform Qualc...
My Opinion on Smartphone Camera vs DSLR

My Opinion on Smartphone Camera vs DSLR

Photography, Tech & Gadgets
In this era, almost everyone in the city have a smartphone, or at least a phone that has an imaging capability. That means a camera function. This has been going on for a while ever since before smartphones by Apple iOS and Google Android was available. As I remember, it began around 2003, when Nokia came out with the most notable camera phone that was sold widely across the world. The Nokia 7650 was the first camera phone by Nokia. That was the one I remembered the most because the camera phone rage started with it. For your additional info, the first ever camera phone was the J-SH04 made by Sharp Corporation and only available in Japan in the year 2000. Back then, the phone's camera has only about 0.3 megapixel with 256 colours, a far cry from what we have today. Fast forward to 2...

Publika Solaris Dutamas – Night Photography

Landscape, Photography
Here I go again with another night photography photo. I already did one the other day which was the view of Kuala Lumpur skyline with KLCC in the foreground. That was quite good but this one was an impromptu shot. But since I'm looking at improving myself at night photography, I took another shot at it but this time without my tripod. Given another try, I would shoot it differently. By different I mean different settings for the camera. I would leave the shutter to open much longer with higher aperture value and lowest ISO possible. That will make all the movements more blurry and everything else brighter. Not really happy with this one though. Comments? Photo Properties Camera: Nikon D90 Nikon 18-105mm VR kit lens Focal Length: 35mm Exposure: 10s Aperture: f/11 ISO: 100
Loving My New Nikon 85mm f/1.8G lens

Loving My New Nikon 85mm f/1.8G lens

Photography
A while back I was surveying for a good portrait lens for my camera and I decided on the Tamron 90mm f/2.8 SP Di Macro Telephoto Autofocus Lens. I posted about it here and I already said that I'm getting my hands on the lens. But when I went to the shop, yes they do have the Tamron lens on sale but they actually told me that the lens is only best for macro photography. Of course I've done some reading on the internet before deciding on what lens to buy and I feel that Tamron 90mm was a good buy. As told and reviewed by some of the photographers online, they said that the lens can be used as a portrait lens too. Pictures are sharp, autofocus is quick and quiet, bokeh is good and to their surprise as well, the lens works wonders. So I made my decision to buy the Tamron 90mm, but when I as...
Getting my hands on this

Getting my hands on this

Photography
I've been in photography for a long time and conducted classes before as well but I didn't buy any other lenses except for the Nikon 50mm f/1.8D as an alternative to my standard kit lens. I kept telling myself that I will one day buy a good prime portrait lens and this may be the one that I'm getting. The Tamron 90mm f/2.8 SP Di Macro Telephoto Autofocus Lens is popular among macro photography enthusiast but it is also a good portrait lens. From the reviews that I've been reading, no one seems to complain about the performance of this particular lens. So I may consider getting this lens soon. Once I've obtain this baby, I will then upload the photos here when I've tried it out and give a little bit of review. Tune in for that. Specifications for this lens can be found here.
